Day Tour S2: Pietroasa - Istrița Research and Development for Viticulture, Winemaking and Fruit Growing Visits

The year 1893 marks the beginning of the Istriţa Fruit Nursery, whose initial task was to multiply the vine seeding material resistant to phylloxera attacks which had destroyed the Romanian viticultural material in only 10 years. At the same time, it was aimed to develop the fruit-growing patrimony in the Curvature Sub-Carpathians region. In 1895 there already was a rich collection of types from almost all fruit tree and shrub species and parent stock saplings were produced and used in grafting valuable types.
The nursery fields and the existing fruit tree collections served as study material for generations of students, but also for researchers who worked here overtime. After its reintegration in 2005, as a component of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, the Istriţa Farm embarked on a new complex modernisation and refurbishment process.
Every summer, the Istrița Cherry Feast is being held, an occasion when students, academics and visitors have the opportunity to participate in visits and practical lessons held in the field and to take part in tastings of cherry varieties. The participants of this visit will also have the opportunity to join this event and to try the cherries grown at the Istriţa Research and Development Station for Fruit Growing.

Pietroasele commune is best known for its archaeological thesaurus - the Pietroasele Treasure also known as Cloșca cu puii de aur (en. the Hen with golden chicks) –a late fourth-century Gothic treasure discovered in 1837, that included around twenty-two objects of gold.
But Pietroasa's real treasure today is wine.
These "treasures" were with more than 120 medals in national and international competitions, more especially for sweet wines, some spices, for which Pietroasa has an unsurpassed vocation. After becoming affiliated, in 2005, to the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, the university put two "bricks", rebuild the Station: young plantations were established and modern principles in winemaking were ensured, while making sure, at the same time, that students can gain both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
Here, wine tastings and visits are organized, where the technological workflow and equipment, as well as the impressive historical collection of over 100,000 bottles can be viewed. Recently, Pietroasa Research and Development Station for Viticulture and Winemaking, resumed trade with its exceptional wines under its own label - "Pietroasa veche."

Day Tour S7: National Village Museum "Dimitrie Gusti"

Participants will walk from the campus to the museum, where they will meet the guide.
09:15 - Guided Technical Visit
The visit will include a guided tour of the museum, offering insights into traditional Romanian rural architecture, construction techniques, and cultural heritage. Participants will explore authentic houses, workshops, and installations representative of various historical regions of Romania.
Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum is one of the largest and most important open-air ethnographic museums in Europe, located in Bucharest, near Herăstrău Park. Established in 1936 by sociologist Dimitrie Gusti, the museum aims to preserve and present the traditional rural life of Romania.
The museum covers an extensive area and includes over 300 authentic buildings such as houses, farmsteads, wooden churches, windmills, and workshops, all carefully relocated from different historical regions of the country. These structures reflect the diversity of Romanian rural architecture, building techniques, and local materials, ranging from wooden houses in mountainous areas to clay and reed constructions from the plains and Danube Delta.
Visitors can explore fully furnished interiors, traditional tools, and household objects, offering a realistic image of daily life in Romanian villages over the centuries. The museum also highlights craftsmanship, agricultural practices, and community organization, providing valuable insight into the social and cultural identity of rural Romania.
Today, the museum serves not only as a cultural and educational space but also as a venue for exhibitions, workshops, and traditional events, helping to keep Romanian heritage alive for future generations.

Following the guided visit, participants will have free time to further explore the museum individually or enjoy the surrounding Herăstrău Park area.
